If you want to try internet dating, I would say the three most important things are:

* Caution

Don't be too eager to meet in person.  Try to get to know more about the person by phone or email.  If you do decide to meet in person, let a friend or family member know who you will be meeting and where.

* Persistence

You likely won't meet Mr. or Mrs. Right the first time out.  Be patient and keep trying but don't try to make it happen.  Trust your instincts.

* An open mind

If your list of requirements for a mate is too stringent, you will probably miss an opportunity to meet someone wonderful.  Be flexible and keep an open mind.  You might be surprised.
